On January 9th, research group Image in Context is organising a workshop & symposium on machine vision in AI, in collaboration with Noorderlicht. During this afternoon, we will take a creative and critical approach to AI.

The event starts with the workshop Remix Your Own [Better] Images of AI which challenges the stereotypical, often inaccurate imagery of AI (e.g., glowing brains, robots). Participants will learn to remix and create their own images that better represent AI’s complexities, particularly its day-to-day uses, unseen value chains, and social implications. It is a hands-on, creative session designed to inspire critical thinking through visual discourse.
Nadia Piet of AIxDESIGN (a community focused on critical approaches to AI) organises the workshop. She is an independent researcher, designer, and organiser focussed on AI, technology, (digital) culture, creativity, and participatory practices.
The second part of the event is a symposium in which we will reflect on biases that exist within machine vision. Although artificial intelligence initially seems neutral and value-free, it is not. Together with speakers from different backgrounds, we explore how human biases and stereotypes influence the way AI represents and evaluates the world. Speakers include Nadia Piet, photographer Martine Stig, and artist & researcher Daniel Leix Palumbo (University of Groningen), amongst others.
