On Wednesday, January 11, Ate van der Zee (chairman of the UMCG Board of Directors) and Dorothea van der Meulen (Dean Minerva Art Minerva) unveiled three art projects in the UMCG. On April 26 the last of these projects got completed.

The artworks were created by students of Minerva Art Academy on behalf of UMCG Art Committee. The artworks contribute to the hospital's commitment to using art for distraction, hope and comfort. The project includes two murals in the Winkelstraat stairwell, an exhibition with various works in the display cases Fonteinstraat and the design for a painting on the air ventilation system of the Beatrix Children's Hospital. A total of 26 students from all of Minerva Art Academy's bachelor programmes worked on the projects.

Coral Club

The young patients of the Special Care unit in the Beatrix Children's Hospital now look out on a cheerful underwater world, painted by students of Minerva Art Academy. The illustration was made on a very special surface; a large air ventilation system on the roof of the hospital

Twenty students from Minerva Art Academy researched the contribution of art to a recovery period for patients in the hospital. From three designs, the children's council, nurses and parents chose the winning design titled the Coral Club. On April 26, the painting on the roof was completed.

Birds in Motion

To encourage employees and visitors of the UMCG to take the stairs instead of the elevator, two third-year Design students have created murals for two centrally located stairwells on the Winkelstraat. The mural in question is "Birds in Motion," which portrays birds in movement. This project is an initiative of the UMCG Healthy Ageing team, which strives to create a healthy environment for both patients and employees. The artists are: Marieke Druiven and Lieve van Loon.

Elements of Nature - Metal, wood, water, fire and earth

Nature is the ground, water, air and everything on it and in it as far as not produced by humans. Can we live in a nature-formed world today or a world formed by the human hand? The four display cases on Fonteinstraat feature an exhibition on natural elements by four students from the Fine Art, Design and Fine Art and Design in Education programme. From their own practice, the students work with materials related to the elements, exploring their relationship to the material. For example, on view is work from ceramics, weeds, soil and textiles. The artists are: Marloes Hoogeveen (1991), Djordi Komrij (1999), Nerea Nogales (2000) and Veldman.
