ROAM: a glimpse into the future and a place for inspiration. For two years, Academie Minerva has used this circular building as a meeting point on campus where art and sustainability converge.
ROAM

ROAM is a self-sustaining and circular pavilion on the Zernike Campus in Groningen, designed and built by students. It provides space for exhibitions, workspaces, and encounters, bringing together education, research, and the professional field. The building is constructed from recycled materials and is fully energy-neutral. ROAM showcases how sustainable innovation works in practice and invites visitors to explore, learn, and be inspired.
The pavilion acts as a window to the innovations of the world of tomorrow, a place where you can roam and discover. The word 'ROAM' simultaneously evokes the freedom to take a look and be inspired by boundary-pushing ideas, in connection with the region.
ROAM X Academie Minerva
Over the next two years, Academie Minerva will use ROAM as an inspiring meeting place on campus where art and sustainability come together. Here, bachelor's and master's students collaborate with researchers on various projects – from research on sustainable materials to experimental exhibitions and artist-in-residence programs. In addition, ROAM hosts lectures, discussions, and unexpected collaborations. This diverse programming demonstrates how art can contribute to innovative ideas for a sustainable future. ROAM invites the professional field, students, educational institutions, and businesses at Zernike Campus to observe, brainstorm, and be inspired.
IHOG
With the opening of ROAM, Academie Minerva's programming begins, featuring an exhibition in collaboration with Innovatie Hub Oost Groningen (IHOG). This partnership has resulted in various exhibitions at the Dutch Design Week and Salone de Mobile in Milan over the years, showcasing work by design students from Academie Minerva under the guidance of designer and lecturer Jack Brandsma. Inside the pavilion, you'll find the results of a study by student Inge van der Ham, exploring potato starch as a natural alternative binding agent combined with hemp fibers. This material, combined with magnesium, was used to design the existing tables, chairs, and lamps, among others, by Minerva alumnus Sebastiaan Baar.
What to expect from April onwards
Over the next two years, various programs will be hosted at ROAM by different courses, lecturers, and students. Starting in April, collaborations will include partnerships with the lectorate Art and Sustainability, the Research Centre Noorderruimte, the Research Centre Biobased Economy, the Frank Mohr Institute, Rijksuniversiteit Groningen, ESKA, Industrial Product Design (IPO), Noorderpoort, Textile Hub, and many more.
