On Oct. 10, the Royal Award for Modern Painting 2024 was presented to Shivangi Kalra, master's student in Painting at the Frank Mohr Institute (FMI).

The prize has provided a stage for young, promising artists since 1871. The two other winners are Tobias Thaens and Faria van Creij-Callender. This year, 483 artists submitted works.

After the presentation, the King opened the exhibition with the works of the winners and nominees. The exhibition will be on display at the Royal Palace Amsterdam from October 11 to November 10, 2024.

From the jury report:

“Shivangi Kalra completed her bachelor's degree in painting at the College of Art in Delhi, India in 2021 and completed her master's degree at the Frank Mohr Institute in Groningen in 2024. The jury was impressed by her large, colorful works that evoke an atmosphere of alienation by the way she manages to evoke a new reality with recognizable spaces, objects and figures. “I have begun to paint more from memories and embrace the confusion that can arise from them,” Kalra said. The painting “And nobody said anything,” for example, depicts a living room in which a bizarre scene takes place; it raises the question of whether this is a dream or even a nightmare.”
