OffCourse Changing Identities is about the student themselves.
Putting down very personal vulnerable issues students struggle with and raises life questions at this moment in their life. For example: hyperfixation; Generational trauma; a lack of emotions; background; fears; social anxieties; struggling with growing up; escapism; facing long-term illness and the loneliness that it brings; diagnosed with autism and dealing with.

The OffCourse started by creating a sense of safety in the classroom so that each individual dared to be themselves.

We did this by starting the OffCourse by ‘model-in-movement’ classes (colored crayons/large format paper/collages). Students worked on the floor in this process. This gave the students a sense of freedom and safety that brought them back to their kindergarten days, where you could just be yourself and be playful.

From there, the students began to share their issues with their classmates and research by a step-by-step plan began:

Starting a quest by exploring idea(s): searching for relevant information; conducting interviews; naming ‘What happens in my head and body when I experience discomfort; fears; worries. Wondering how to make that clear to others?’

Ideation by creating a ‘real’ world - a set-up by using metaphors; and photograph and project these photos in different spaces. This to form ideas for their work.

The final works were used to start open conversations with families/relatives sharing their issues creating more understanding.
