Unlock the Strange with MADtech — Where Artists Redefine Technology
Unlock the Strange with MADtech — Where Artists Redefine Technology
The MADtech programme challenges self-driven creators to embrace uncertainty and confront the unknown, with continuous support throughout the process. Students are encouraged to experiment with unfamiliar technologies and learn through hands-on projects. As they explore and prototype, they uncover the hidden mechanics of how technology shapes society and culture. With guidance from both tutors, and guest lectures students take control of their learning and push boundaries, developing critical, innovative work that blends art, design, and technology in unexpected ways. MADtech fosters deep engagement with experimentation, empowering students to navigate complexity and turn the unknown into a creative opportunity.
Enrolling in the MADtech programme positions you at the forefront of technological and artistic innovation, equipping you to make significant contributions to the evolving fields of art and design. The programme is strategically aligned with the Art & Technology research line at the Knowledge Centre Art & Society, as well as with key external stakeholders, offering a broad range of opportunities for meaningful engagement and participation.
The first year focuses on exploring and expanding your approach to creative problem-solving. Emphasis is placed on prototyping and experimentation, where your unique, self-directed approach is key. This learning process is reciprocal: students and teachers actively engage with one another, sharing insights and shaping each other's perspectives. In this collaborative setting, students learn by doing, often tackling projects and ideas they don’t fully understand at first, fostering an atmosphere of curiosity and shared growth.
In the *What Matters* sessions, students present their work to peers and faculty, sparking discussions that are both challenging and constructive. These presentations provide a critical feedback loop, allowing students to refine their concepts and expand their skill sets based on real-time input from a supportive academic community.
Throughout this foundational year, the programme encourages students to experiment with ‘old’ technologies and explore the underlying mechanisms of media and tech that might usually go unnoticed. This could include everything from the analogue aspects of electronics to the hidden social impacts of digital platforms. You’ll also delve into the complex ways technology influences society, sharpening your critical eye towards both visible and invisible technological forces.
Hands-on, collaborative activities—such as hackathons—are integrated into the curriculum to foster a learning-by-doing approach. These projects allow students to bring ideas to life while expanding their technical abilities, giving a practical edge to the conceptual work.
MADtech thrives on interdisciplinary exchange. You’ll have opportunities to collaborate with the *New Audiences and Innovative Practice* (NAIP) programme at the Prince Claus Conservatoire, as well as with local theatres and galleries. These collaborations deepen your understanding of how media and technology can interact with other forms of art, performance, and exhibition, enriching your creative work and expanding its potential impact.
Field trips to exhibitions, festivals, and artist-run studios are also part of the programme, exposing you to new environments and artistic practices that will broaden your perspective.
The first year of the MADtech programme emphasises hands-on experimentation, skill expansion, and collaborative feedback, allowing students to explore the societal impacts of technology through self-driven projects. In the second year, the focus shifts to the thesis and final project, where students refine their research and test their ideas publicly, receiving real-time feedback to shape a culminating piece that brings their vision to life.
In the second year of the MADtech programme, the focus shifts towards developing your thesis and final project, allowing for a deep dive into the ideas and research that shape your work. This stage includes trips designed to broaden your perspectives and fuel your creative vision. One of the highlights is the opportunity to undertake a trial exhibition at NP3 Gallery, a space that plays a critical role in advancing your research and refining your project. Here, you’ll receive real-time feedback from a diverse audience across the city, offering invaluable insights into what resonates and what may need adjustment.
The thesis is also central to this year, underpinning your final project—whether it’s an installation, interactive piece, or other media-based work—by grounding it in research and ideas you’re passionate about sharing. Through this project, you bring your chosen subject to life and engage your audience in a meaningful exploration of your topic.
